What is Rep Term?

For those not involved in Rep Term, you may be wondering

What is Rep Term?

Rep Term stands for Repertory Theatre Term, a term in which 36 students from a broad range of majors comes together to help build two main stage productions under the direction of theatre faculty members. This special term occurs every three years, allowing each Knox student to participate only once.

The central component to this unique opportunity is the construction - both intellectually and physically - of two main stage shows. The students spend several hours a day working in the scene and costume shops, and contributing to various crews including props, publicity, and dramaturgy, to name only a few.

While working on the shows, the students also take two classes devoted to improving their performances: Seminar (taught by Neil Blackadder), which focuses on the history of the plays and playwrights chosen for the term, and Conservatory (Movement taught by Jen Smith and Voice taught by Liz-Carlin Metz), which works to help students understand and better use their bodies both on and off stage.

This year, Rep Term XVI will showcase the young talent of the Knox Theatre Department in two extraordinary shows. The first, directed by Liz Carlin-Metz, is The Green Bird by Carlo Gozzi, a piece derived from the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte. The second, directed by Jeff Grace, is The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, and will explore the concept of sustainability not only in the theatre but in the world at large.

The shows will open on February 28th, 2013, with The Green Bird opening first and The Caucasian Chalk Circle opening the next night, March 1st.
